"Dog" is a derogatory term applied to certain flowers comparing them unfavourably with a superior variety of the flower. This pretty little flower is thought to be inferior to the scented Sweet Violet (Viola odorata). Other names for unscented violets include "pig violet", "blue mice" and "shoes and stockings"
